Dancer, choreographer, actor & movie star, Fred Astaire features in the sixth of our Vintage Photo Series, with his sister, Adele. Fred’s stage and film career last over 76 years during which he starred in 31 musical films. As Gene Kelly said, “the history of dance on film began with Astaire”.
The dancing duo were in London, appearing in various stage productions such as George, Ira Gershwin‘s Lady Be Good, Funny Face and The Band Wagon and this shot was taken at their London ‘home’ – The Savoy London - in 1923 on their rooftop. The rooftop of The Savoy at this time was often used for great photo opportunities such as this one!
The partnership with Adele lasted until 1932 when she got married and Fred returned to Hollywood beginning the ascent of his soaring solo career. We at Magellan are Astaire addicts! Enjoy.
